The Quantocks

Characterised by deep wooded valleys or "combes", open heath land and rich flora and fauna, the Quantocks are ideal for walking, cycling and horseriding. Such is their special quality, that this area was the first in the country to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.

Cothelstone Hill is one of the best vantage points in Somerset, allowing 360 degree views from the Mendip Hills in the north, across the Somerset Levels, sweeping over the Blackdown Hill onto the Brendon Hills and into Exmoor National Park. The hill offers a number of walking trails, picnic facilities and great opportunities for wildlife watching with deer, foxes and badgers all being regularly seen, as well as the resident herd of Exmoor Ponies which graze the hill.

Great Wood is a large conifer and broadleaf woods ideal for walking, horse-riding, cycling and picnicking. There is even an area to have a BBQ. It can be approached from either Crowcombe or Over Stowey.
